Embossing, moire and Emerising or sueding are mechanical finishing techniques all using calender steel rollers to change the final appearance of cloth. These are known as dry finishing techniques. These will improve the drape, handle and appearance of a fabric.

Bleaching, mercerising, crease resistance and flame proofing are all chemical finishing techniques that change the appearance and performance of fabrics. These are known as wet finishing techniques. These will improve the physical performance of a fabric.
