Graduate Student - Jade Rogers at Acne Studios

It was lovely to catch up recently with Jade Rogers who went to Heriot Watt University after leaving Adam Smith College Fashion Department. She recently completed an internship in Stockholm, Sweden with uber-cool brand Acne Studios.

Acne Studios is part of the creative collective Acne (Ambition to Create Novel Expression) which was founded in 1996. In 1997 co-founder Jonny Johansson created one hundred pairs of jeans in raw denim with red stitching and gave them away to friends and family in Stockholm. Acne Studios have creative bases all over the world and they design, market, and distribute fashion apparel and jeans worldwide.

Q1 What did you do after your time at Adam Smith College?

I continued with my studies and went on to Heriot Watt school of Fashion and Textiles to get a degree with BA (Hons) in Fashion Design For Industry.

Q2. What was the best part of your degree and why?

Originally I had planned to go to Glasgow University to study Fashion Marketing, but I missed a grade... My HND with Adam Smith turned out to be a silver lining. Christine, our Curriculum Head, inspired me with the fashion industry in its entirety which ignited my passion for design. I wouldn't have got to where I am now without that adventure.

Q3. Can you explain the aims/ purpose of your internship?

Acne - Design Intern with Womenswear, collectively working with the entirety of the womens team to build the catalogue of work towards the creation and production of capsule, pre and main collections : technical drawings, fittings and samples.
I think the purpose of any internship is to expand your skill set. If you are lucky enough to be invited to be a part of their team, then you immerse yourself 100% and learn every everything you can from them.

Q4. Why Acne and where were you exactly?

Jonny Johansson. He's a creative force like no other! I think for any design student/graduate, there will be always be houses/teams you want to be part of because you know the work they do will intensify your motivation to become the best you can. Acne is definitely one of those teams. They are all geniuses'.

Q5. How long were you there and were you paid?

I was in Stockholm for a 3 month paid internship.

Q6. What type of activities did you get involved with and what was the role of the individual within the team ?

The teams' day to day activities vary, as with any design team. It's all a progression for their end result - sampling, technical drawings, sewing, research, overviews, fitting pictures. Individually we work, but its all part of a team, it all unites. This is key to creativity and totality.

Q7. What was the best part of the internship?

The talent of the team made everyday great. But the greatest lesson was the importance of flawless execution.
