"Cha toir a'bhoidhchead goil air a' Phoit" (Beauty won't boil the pot)
Katie Barratt's graduate collection at Gray's School of Art, has at it's heart Gaelic culture.
Using the photography of Werner Kissling, who in 1920 photographed and recorded life in Eriskay, Scotland. Katie Barrett has researched and created many wonderful sketch books of hand tinted Kissling pictures. Extracting the wardrobe of the hard working women of Eriskay. Katie has then created a collection that takes as its inspiration; the silhouettes, the layering of clothing, the dense woollen outer garments and the bold prints on the aprons, to create a contemporary interpretation of these working garments.
This collection honours the women, the culture, the fabrics and traditions of the Scottish isles.
