NC Fashion at the Simpson Institute

This evening NC fashion students had the chance to show their work at the Simpson Institute, Upper Largo. This was not work from their course units but an extra portfolio assignment where they were requested to design dresses for girls and ladies using calico. The theme decided upon, due to the time of year, was the foil wrappers from chocolate eggs and so most dresses had a metallic element of embellishment.

It was a great success, well received and was also great fun for students, models and audience alike.
I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped to make this night so successful , but a very special thank you is needed for all the little models who so bravely stepped into the bright lights of the cat walk.

Christmas . . . cheap thrills

A 'cheap thrills' inspired photo shoot today with NC Fashion to kick start their ideas on hair, beauty and styling for the fashion show in April. As you can see ideas of Christmas were at the forefront of everyone's minds.

Cheap thrills

It is almost Christmas but already I am thinking of Easter.
We have been requested to produce a fashion show with work by our NC fashion students and it is to have a metallic element inspired by the decorative foils of Easter eggs.

The styling of this fashion shoot by Lena Kholkina and Natasha Lyubchenko for New Wave fashion editorial is perfect . . . time to collect Christmas decorations for Easter.

Katie Orton

 

  

 

Katie Orton graduated in Sculpture from ECA in 2005. In the last two years her work has explored clothing in a playful way.
Katie repurposes second hand clothes and sculpts them in reaction to places she visits, events, and feelings. Most of all though Katie plays with and explores garments and fabrics, she has fun, she is not afraid of them or their constituent parts, and uses them as another medium in her tool box for self expression.
Katie helped during the NC's Whirling Dervish event this spring.

This week we had an end of year Fashion show for the NC fashion students, not everyone could exhibit, as some students were still finishing assessment work. However we managed to show friends and family the amazing achievements of our students and the processes that they go through to get from design and toile to finished garment.
Thank you to everyone who came, to the wonderful models who volunteered and to all the friends and staff who helped so much and made the show such a success.

Mask mayhem

NC Fashion had great fun making many masks, headdresses and other creative head happenings today, using their imagination and learning about styling and presentation. You can see more of their work here.

Whirling

NC Fashion created an amazing spectacle today with their whirling dervish skirts.
We have been making 'Whirling Dervish' style skirts for the past month and came together in the atrium space to see how they worked and improve our spinning skills. (more pictures)

Ann Hardie Designs

NC fashion students today benefited from a full tour of Ann Hardie Designs where Ann was able to share her extensive knowledge and experience in bridal wear production and show them around her workshop and shop. It was an informative, interesting and fun day.

Whirling Dervish Skirts

We started whirling today and set about making whirling dervish skirts, we will finish them in our second session in two weeks. Some are being painted, some appliqued and some tie dyed and then all we have to do is practice spinning, fun!
