Julian Roberts II

On Friday we have the wonderful Julian Roberts visiting the fashion department at Adam Smith College to demonstrate and take workshops in his specialist technique called subtraction cutting. Julian's method of cutting is exciting, innovative and unpredictable, although with experience it becomes easier to manage the result. I am looking forward to seeing the surprising results of this workshop on the day and its impact on the work our students produce in the future.

Julian Roberts

Julian Roberts constructs fabrics like an engineer, they are folded like origami masterpieces , his technique is called 'Subtraction Cutting'.
'Subtraction Cutting' is an approach to garment design that allows for trial and error, chance discovery, multiple flipside viewpoints, and the ability to cut fast and loose without too many overbearing reference to numbers, or rigid mathematical rules.'
Please watch the 5 minute Video (you will find top right hand side of Julian Roberts website).
