Katie Orton

 

  

 

Katie Orton graduated in Sculpture from ECA in 2005. In the last two years her work has explored clothing in a playful way.
Katie repurposes second hand clothes and sculpts them in reaction to places she visits, events, and feelings. Most of all though Katie plays with and explores garments and fabrics, she has fun, she is not afraid of them or their constituent parts, and uses them as another medium in her tool box for self expression.
Katie helped during the NC's Whirling Dervish event this spring.

Emma Hardstaff I

Emma Hardstaff is just graduating in fashion from ECA, a Belfast girl she likes to make  a sow's ears into silk purses with her textile technology.
"I like taking plain fabrics to the high end of couture. It's fun Cheep fake fur can be luxurious if you add other elements and manipulate it  . . .it gives the wearer an air of intrigue." Emma Hardstaff

Lu Flux II

Lu Flux has caught the essence of fun and humour in all of her collections here are some from her A-Lu-Ha spring summer 2012 including an apron dress. her work is going down a storm in Japan as part of the annual UK Trade and Investments mission. Thanks Jay for reminding me of her.

Evelyn Morrison

These are images of Evelyn Morrison's degree show 2011 at ECA. They illustrate a progression of ideas about privacy and quietness (see quiet box 2010). Evelyn loves working in textiles and since graduating has been experimenting with random patterns created in cross-stitch.

Joanna Pennycard

Joanna Pennycard's costumes are Beardslyesk decedent, erotic and grotesque, they leer at you as you enter the room, they are fantastic!

Sophie Wallace

Having written a few posts about Fashion at this years Edinburgh College of Arts Degree Show, I have to write some posts about the sumptuous and fantastic Performance Costume graduates also.
Above is the work of Sophie Wallace who's work created character costumes for The Jungle Book, but from the perspective of a blind audience, "The costumes are a story telling device, so they are touch descriptive. All the fabric has been manipulated to feel as animal like as possible and takes reference from traditional Indian clothing."

Vera Chan

Taking inspiration from the writer Kobo Abe ,Vera Chan's garments are like layers of skin, 'acting as front doors connecting the inside and outside of the human being'. Vera Chan's garments are beautiful honey toned hand woven silks, the craftsman ship visible in the detail of her work is superb, her buttons amazing.

Anna Stephenson

Anna Stephenson's floral printed silks have been sliced and rewoven to create a unique collection inspired by femininity, twins and duality. "I have developed various techniques in digital printing, screen printing and cutting to produce a collection mainly focused on surface design" Anna has been awarded the I-ON Graduate Fashion Prize 2011 and is going on to study a MFA i Fashion design and Society at Parsons The New School Of Design in New York. Klara Sormark

Klara Sormark produced this elegant sheer collection in orange and cream. Klara has been researching clothing and status "clothes and the way they are worn, can give anyone status."

Emma Clifton

Wham! Emma Clifton's clothes blast you with colour and style and are a great introduction to a series of posts about this years Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show. I cannot recommend this show highly enough in terms of Textiles, Fashion and Costume Design, it is superb! If you are in Scotland try to get there, it is on Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th June Mon-Thursday 10am- 8pm and 10am-5pm on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Bottom two images: Christopher Moore Ltd

Emotionally Considerate Design

This week with see the Edinburgh College Of Art Fashion Show. The show will feature the final collections of 20 graduating students from Fashion and Performance Costume. This year there will also be three new labels launched by graduating students as part of the 'All walks on the Catwalk' project. This project was established by Caryn Franklin, Debra Borne and Erin O'Connor. The objective of the project is to encourage a more diverse ideal of beauty within fashion, celebrating diversity and promoting 'Emotionally Considerate design' where fashion designers consider the emotional needs of the wearer. The students were assigned a 'icon' woman whom they had to get to know before specifically designing a dress that meets their needs. The 'Icon' women are different sizes and ages and one is pregnant and they will all be modeling the bespoke creations in this upcoming cat walk.
